Castaway Cay 5K

Recently Lenny and I took a Disney Cruise from Florida to the Bahamas. One of our stops was Disney’s beautiful island, Castaway Cay.

We have always enjoyed this island for its myriad of water sports, plentiful beaches, bike riding spots, barbecue lunch and sunshine. We were not disappointed this time.

Additionally, Lenny and I have also always wanted to do the Castaway Cay 5K. We were surprised to learn that the format of this race has changed. The Castaway Cay 5K is now a self-paced event, with no group start time. The start and end to the race is just behind the bike rental booth.

Not to be denied a Mickey Mouse Medal, Lenny and I started the 5K at approximately 10:00 AM. I might add that this was not our wisest move, as the Bahamian sun is much stronger than the Florida sun! It was a hot, hot, hot, race.

Lenny was overall pleased with his running pace. I completed a walk/run, with the emphasis on walk, in good form. After collecting our Mickey medals at the bike rental booth, we returned to the ship to take a quick shower before our beach day.

Nonetheless, we were proud of our medals, and saw and encouraged many other walkers and runners as they completed their journey. The spirit among the running community never ceases to amaze me!

Overall, when you decide to run/walk the Castaway Cay 5K, be sure to do so early in the morning; the sooner the better. And don’t forget to enjoy the scenery and have fun!

All the best,

Jennifer
