The Battle of Bloody Mose was a turning point during the War of Jenkins' Ear. In June 1740, British forces had captured Fort Mose, aiming to use it as a strategic point to seize St. Augustine. However, a coalition of Spanish soldiers, free Black militia from Fort Mose, and Native American allies launched a surprise attack at dawn on June 26, reclaiming the fort and forcing the British to retreat. This victory not only safeguarded Spanish Florida but also underscored the bravery and resilience of the diverse defenders.
